When companies look into implementing an on-site treatment system for their wastewater, inevitably the first question is, “How much will it cost?”
The second question, which doesn’t seem to be asked quite as often is, “How much can I save?”
Costs relating to wastewater can run into hundreds of thousands of pounds a year for some companies but the correct wastewater treatment system could reduce these costs by up to 90%! However, some companies still wait until there is risk of environmental impact or local water authority shutdowns/fines to install an effective wastewater treatment system.

For most food, drink & dairy manufacturers, the wastewater is disposed of as a ‘trade effluent’ into mains sewerage under a license from their local water authority. The water authority calculates consent parameters which the company must adhere to. The charge for receiving and treating the effluent is determined using the ‘Mogden formula’ which takes into account the chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS) and daily volume (m3) of the effluent.
There are two main factors that will determine the cost to discharge your wastewater:
1) Quantity – The amount of water you process per day and per hour if you have high peak times of discharge.
2) Quality – The type and level of contaminants is the most important factor and your local water authority will set parameters (consent levels) which will determine the quality that the wastewater must be at the point of discharge.
These points will also directly relate to the cost of your treatment system as these will determine the equipment required to effectively treat the effluent.
Here are some important questions to address:
• Do you process foods that leave you with wastewater heavy in fats, oils & greases?
• Is your wastewater high in suspended solids?
• Will pH correction be required?
For example, the waste produced form a typical food and beverage manufacturing site will revolve around the removal of and fats, oils, greases (suited to Dissolved Air Flotation).
WHERE TO START
The first step to implementing a wastewater treatment system is to identify the best system for your particular wastewater. To do this, a sample of your current waste will need to be analysed. Generally this analysis would include a breakdown of the wastewater which will identify the various contaminants as well as chemical testing which will determine the chemical balancing required to prepare your waste for treatment (flocculation, pH correction etc.). The results of this analysis will determine which system is best for your wastewater and you can then use this information to compare, plan and price your treatment options.
