Severe UK Wastewater Restrictions are Coming

The UK Government is Set to Severely Increase Effluent Treatment Restrictions.

In 2020, raw effluent was released over 400,000 times into natural waterways.

To mitigate this, the UK government had a vote earlier this week to seriously restrict the amount of untreated effluent that can be released by municipal and industrial wastewater sites.

The first of its kind in this calibre, the bid was rejected by the house of lords. However, it will only be a matter of time until this enforcement is passed. Especially with increasing sustainability awareness, upcoming climate conferences and general pressure from the public.

Though harsher restrictions have yet to be forced upon UK wastewater sites, the Lords have agreed on an amendment to the environmental bill, enforcing a legal duty for water companies and the government to make ‘progressive reductions’ in untreated wastewater.

In accordance with these changes, wastewater treatment systems will be more important than ever before.
